Penguins are a species of bird found in the southern hemisphere. They are flightless and have a semi-aquatic lifestyle. The birds spend 75-80% of their lives in the ocean, where they feed; however, they will mate, lay eggs, raise chicks, and rest on land. Their long, streamlined bodies have been constructed for aquatic life and help propel them through the water.

1. They Have Heavy Bodies

Penguins have large bodies, which prevents them from being able to fly. As they spend most of their time in the water, the birds have huge fat stores and densely packed feathers to help them survive the frigid temperatures of the ocean.

Their bodies are also made up of heavy muscles to help them dive deep and swim faster as they forage. Hence, with the bulk of their bodies, the penguins cannot fly.

2. Lack of an Efficient Breathing System For Flight

Flying requires a lot of energy; hence, birds need sufficient oxygen for their cells to create the energy for proper functioning.

Birds have an efficient breathing system that enables them to get enough oxygen for flight, even at high altitudes where oxygen is scarce. Their air capillaries have a large surface area that allows for more oxygen from each breath to be exchanged for carbon dioxide from the blood and tissues within a short time.

However, in the case of penguins, their lungs are adapted to allow them to hold their breath underwater for long periods, which doesn’t meet the requirements for flight.

3. Lack of Strong Breast Muscles

For most birds, the chest muscles make up about half of their weight. However, penguins’ bodies are full of muscles, making them heavy. Despite the muscles’ strength, they are not strong enough to enable them to fly.

4. Penguins Have Small Feathers 

The penguin’s feathers are small and close together to form water-repellent layers. Other birds have lighter feathers with a larger surface area, thus making it easier for them to fly.

5. They Have Solid Bones

To fly in the air, birds have to be light; hence, some of their bones have special holes in them. However, penguins have all solid bones as they are adapted to fly in the water.

6. They Lack Wings

Penguins don’t have wings like other birds do. Instead, they have flippers that help them swim, keep balance, and walk upright.

Penguins can weigh up to 75 pounds or more. Hence, they need stronger wings to get to the sky. As the flippers are shorter and stiffer, their inflexibility, together with a surface area that is too small, makes it impossible for them to support the penguin’s weight for flight.

Can Penguins Fly Short Distances

No, penguins cannot fly any distance as their wings are not adapted to flight. However, they can travel faster through the air than through water. Hence, at times, they launch themselves out of the water to evade predators chasing after them.

While on land, the penguins cannot walk faster. They have to glide on their bellies if they want to move quickly.

Yes, penguins do fly in the water. Even though they are unable to fly through the air, penguins can fly underwater by swimming. They can swim at an average speed of 5-9 km/h, whereas the Gentoo penguin averages 36 km/h.

For efficient swimming, the penguins use the muscles in their chests to bring their flippers downward and the muscles between their shoulders to move them upward.

Penguins keep streamlined, with their feet close to their bodies and under their tail. If a penguin wants to turn right while swimming, its right foot drops down, and the bird turns its head slightly to the right. Both its feet come down when it needs to stop, its tail comes up, and the penguin stops flapping its flippers.

When Did Penguins Stop Being Able to Fly?

Penguins abandoned flight for swimming over 60 million years ago. Due to the cold nature of their habitat, it was less populated by other animals, resulting in less competition for food. Hence, penguins chose an aquatic livelihood and evolved to survive in it.

It’s also believed that the penguins were forced to adapt to living in the water to survive. Hence, their feathered wings evolved into flippers, which help them swim as they forage and escape from predators like leopard seals in the water.

1. They Are Adapted to Swimming

Penguins have adapted to swimming and diving.

Their flippers are short, stubby, and strong for swimming. The flippers cannot bend, hence making it possible for the penguins to fly through the water at high speed without breaking them.

The penguins’ dense, solid bones, which are not hollow, also allow them to dive and be less buoyant while in the water.

2. Much Energy Cost

Penguins realized that they use more energy to fly than when swimming; thus, they decided that they needed flippers more than wings.

Hence, the penguins gave up flying to focus on swimming, as they depended on the ocean for food.

3. Easy Access to Food

Due to the availability of enough food, the penguins didn’t have to fly far to look for it.

They could also access deeper depths than other seabirds, making them more competitive for food underwater.

4. Had No Threats

It’s believed that penguins had no predators preying on them. So, they didn’t evolve to fly, as they had nothing to fly away from. They only had to evolve to adapt to their aquatic habitat, which necessitated the development of flippers. 

Can Penguins Evolve to Fly?

Even though it is believed that their ancestors used to fly, penguins have never been able to fly. Hence, their bodies have evolved to enable them to live comfortably in their habitat.

Due to their body formation consisting of dense bones heavily packed with fat and short, inflexible bones, penguins are not going to evolve to fly in the near future.
